How do I access the Trusts and Estates book online?

If you have purchased access you should have received an email with instructions. In summary, to access the online book:
  1. Go to www.trustsandestates.com.au.
  2. Login using the same login credentials you use for the main Taxation Institute website.
    Note: If you don't have a password or can't remember it, click "Forgotten password" just under the login boxes.
  3. Note: You will know you are logged in when your name appears under the Welcome message in the left panel of the website.
  4. Click Online Access 2007.
  5. Scroll down and agree to the terms and conditions. You must do this each time you access the online book.

I can't see the table of contents. What should I do?

Make sure the book is open and that you satisfy the system requirements. For more information, refer to:

Allow a minute or so for the book to "load"—there are in excess of 14 000 topics. You should then see something like:

Check in the Internet Explorer status bar at the top of the screen for any messages—you may have to explicitly allow Internet Explorer to load the content.

Try expanding the table of contents hierarchy by double-clicking on the book icon. If there is no icon to click on (normally visible in the frame on the left side of your screen as per above screenshot) then you may need to install a plugin. Contact the Tax Institute Website support team for more information.

What are the system requirements for viewing the online book?

The best experience is via Internet Explorer 6 or 7.
The online book uses a table of contents (TOC) to allow users to navigate the book, whilst maintaining context. This TOC supports Internet Explorer 6 and 7. Other browsers will work, including Firefox, but with reduced functionality and speed. We strongly recommend the use of Internet Explorer 6 or 7.

Important: Once loaded the book should be quick to browse (the same as a typical website would be). If this is not the case it is likely you need to adjust your web browser security settings and/or install a plugin. Contact the Tax Institute Website support team for more information.

The preferred technology for the TOC is ActiveX. Ideally, users should install this plugin (see ActiveX versus Dynamic HTML TOC below).

ActiveX versus Dynamic HTML TOC
Depending on the Web browser and its security settings, one of two TOCs load when you "open" the book. It may occasionally be necessary to install the plugin manually, in which case please contact our Support so we can provide the free install file and instructions. (Usually it is sufficient to add the Trusts and Estates website as a trusted site and then install the plugin when prompted).

If the security settings are too high, or if a browser other than Internet Explorer (6 or 7) is detected, a dynamic HTML version loads. This has limited features compared with the ActiveX version as summarised in the table below:

The book is "slow". What can I do?

The book is large—in excess of 14 000 topics—and takes a while to load.  Additionally, the use of Internet Explorer 6 or 7 is highly recommended as per What are the system requirements for viewing the online book? With a fast Internet connection and Internet 6 or 7 installed, the book should load within a minute or so. Once loaded, moving from one page to another should take a similar time to browsing any website. If this is not the case, you may need to adjust some browser settings and/or install a browser plugin to speed the viewing. Please contact Support for more information.

There is an error in the formatting or content, who can I report it to?

We have high standards for quality and follow a review process but acknowledge the possibility of occasional mistakes given the 14 000+ topics (equivalent to over 1200 printed pages in the printed copy) and frequency of updates. Please alert us to any problems so that they can be fixed. Please don't assume others will report it!

For how long do I have access to the book?

Customers who purchase online access receive 12 months online access and a hard copy of the book.

Can others in my company use the online service?

Online access is generally purchased for a single user (you) and is non-transferable. Do not share your login credentials with others. It is possible to purchase additional licenses at a reduced per-seat rate if more than one person in your organisation requires online access. Note: If you have purchased access on behalf of one of your staff, please contact the Membership team on (02) 8223 0060 so that this user can be set up with their own login credentials.

How do I receive updates to the book?

Updated content will be released several times a year (online version only). If the content has changed, the next time you login to the website and open the book, you will see those changes. To check which content has changed since your last viewing, consult the "Updates" section near the beginning of the book.
